Using Extreme Collaboration with SMART Notebook 11

Looking for a way to use the classroom set of iPads with your SMART  Board interactive whiteboard?  With the release of SMART Notebook 11 came the introduction to add-ons. (It is a puzzle looking icon tab).  These add-ons provide a means for third-party software developers to create apps that can run within SMART Notebook.  The first add-on was the Activity Builder.  This allows you to create your own “Vortex game-like” activities in your notebook file.

Recently, a new add-on was released in beta form, and it is a great collaboration tool.  It is the XC add-on, and it allows your students to be contributing participants in your notebook 11 lesson using any internet-enabled device (iPad, smartphone, tablet, PC, etc).  With XC, students can send text messages directly into your SMART Notebook lesson.  This is a great tool for collecting ideas comments, feelings, feedback, answers, or thoughts throughout your lesson.

Students can use the traditional method of typing in the website address ( )  then the session code, or the teacher can utilize the “Insert QR Code” function.  Students can use their phones or iPads to scan the QR code to participate in a lesson fast and easy.

To use this feature, first open Notebook 11, and click on the Add-Ons tab.  Click on the XC icon, and follow the instructions.   You will create your FREE account, then follow the instructions of how students join.  It is a quick, easy, set-up and I think you’ll enjoy the results!
